Treaty Two Territory – Interlake Reserves Tribal Council (IRTC) is proud to announce that Ebb and Flow First Nation community member Seth Mckenzie has signed a professional basketball contract in Asia. Mckenzie is known by IRTC community members for giving back to our communities through our basketball camps and for playing on the IRTC’s sponsored team the Warchiefs.
“On behalf of all of our community members, we want to congratulate Seth Mckenzie for this wonderful news of signing a professional basketball contract,” said IRTC Chair and Chief of Lake Manitoba First Nation Cornell McLean. “We’re proud of him for his service to community and for this great accomplishment. He will represent our community members well while he plays abroad.”
Mckenzie is currently playing for the Warchiefs basketball team, an Indigenous Men’s basketball team comprised of Manitoba First Nations and Métis players and currently ranked second in the country.
McKenzie will be going to play basketball in Thailand this September. He attended Kildonan East Collegiate from 2013-2017 before attending the Canadian Mennonite University from 2017-2022, and Columbia Bible for his last year of athletic eligibility in 2023-2024. Mckenzie signed a contract with Overseas Supreme, who play in the Thailand Global Basketball League (TGBL), hopefully the first of many pro contracts. He’ll be playing in Bangkok in October through December.
“Seth has shown his dedication to community by helping younger players get involved and get better. His participation in the IRTC Warchiefs basketball program, an Indigenous basketball initiative focused on youth development and athletic competition, has been invaluable to the youth in our community,” added Executive Director Karl Zadnik. “We’re proud to see him represent our communities overseas and look forward to this next chapter in his basketball career.”
Mckenzie started in all games at CMU and CBC. At CMU, he averaged 16 points per game while leading his team in three-pointers made and percentage. He won many awards and accolades during his time at CMU, such as NIAC all-conference, defensive player of the year, MVP, MCAC player of the week, Lionheart player of the month, MCAC player of the month, and many others. He also averaged nine points per game while leading the PACWEST conference, was leading in three-pointers made and percentage, and helped his team reach a program record in wins and in points in a game.
