The Interlake Reserves Tribal Council Inc. (IRTC) Declares a state of emergency as wildfires continue to threaten the communities of Peguis First Nation, Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation and a partial of Pinaymootang First Nation. Tragically, homes in both Fairford and Peguis have already been lost to the flames. Currently, two wildfires on each side of the road into Kinonjeoshtegon are rapidly approaching toward the community and has began evacuation procedures.
The wildfires, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, pose an immediate danger to the safety and well-being of our residents. The IRTC has activated emergency procedures, and an Emergency Command Centre has been established at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites to coordinate response efforts and support for affected Communities and Families.
Chief Cornell McLean, Chairman of the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council Inc., stated, “We are in a critical situation that requires immediate action and support. Our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes, and we are committed to providing all necessary resources to safeguard our communities. We must come together during this challenging time.”
Chief Stan Bird of Peguis First Nation emphasized the urgency of the situation: “The losses our community has faced are heartbreaking. We are mobilizing all available resources and working hand in hand with emergency services to protect lives and property. It is essential that everyone remains vigilant and follows evacuation protocols.”
Chief Tony Travers of Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation added, “Our communities are strong, and we will overcome this crisis together. I urge everyone to stay informed and heed the advice of emergency responders. We will ensure that all necessary support is given to those who need it most. The emergency command center is working tirelessly to coordinate resources and support for those affected by these devastating fires.”
