Treaty 1 Territory – In a powerful display of athleticism, unity, and cultural pride, the U-17 IRTC Chiefs, an Indigenous basketball team representing the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council, has captured the Boys U-17 championship title at the Battle for Turtle Island Tournament held this past weekend in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The team’s victory is a historic milestone, not only for the players and their community but for Indigenous sports across the country. Competing against some of the nation’s top talent, the IRTC Chiefs delivered a series of inspiring performances, culminating in a hard-fought and emotional win in the final match against Northern Flyers.
Chief Cornell McLean, Chairman of IRTC says “It is with great honour to present the U-17 IRTC Chiefs Basketball team with recognition for winning this Battle of Turtle Island. This is one of the biggest Indigenous basketball tournaments in Canada and the USA and we want to recognise the team for their talent. The IRTC supports Indigenous basketball initiatives and programs, and we continue to donate and support across the province.”
IRTC Chief Executive Officer, Karl Zadnik states “As a basketball player and coach at the age of 44, I continue to support the basketball movement in our communities and urban landscapes. We would like to honour the team with the recognition they deserve. Our vision to emphasize sports in community encourages healthy wellbeing practices and keeps our youth away from negative influences.”
Along with the championship win, Coach Aaron Walker is recognized leading his team and his son, Aiden Walker, who won Tournament MVP. Together, Aaron and Aiden represent IRTC as well as their home community, Peguis First Nation. We are beyond proud of what these athletes have accomplished, the players have shown incredible heart, discipline, and teamwork. This win is for our people and our communities.
