Job Description:
Reporting to the CEO, the Education Director’s main focus is to oversee the management of the overall day-to-day operations, planning, development and implementation strategies for IRTC’s Education Programs and Services while actively supporting and collaborating with programs in each of the affiliated and independent communities in the IRTC region, programs, staff and students and other specialized service providers to assure the successful achievement of IRTC’s vision, mission and program objectives resulting in education and student success.
The Education Director will become a part of IRTC’s Senior Management Team and provide the leadership and education expertise. This position will promote individual and IRTC’s First Nation by delivering the education services and programs, manage the Education Department’s work plan activities, deliverables and other projects as they arise, along with providing advice, expertise, supports and advocacy. The Education Director will provide the mentoring, supervision, management and assistance to its staff, students and First Nations in this department.
Key Responsibilities:
The Education Director’s responsibility is to ensure the highest standards in programming and delivery are maintained while performing duties in the following areas:
• Provide leadership and direction to planning, organizing, implementing, maintaining and evaluating culturally relevant and quality education programs and services. Conduct this in a manner that is respectful of diversity, and in alignment with the culture and traditions of the communities served.
• Develops, coordinates and oversees the management and implementation of IRTC’s Education Programs.
• Provide post-secondary student supports such as monitoring education student progress, providing academic / personal / social / career counseling, issuance and approval of education financial payments, referrals to social service agencies and programs and reporting.
• Responsible for student case management files and documents.
• Responsible for reporting and program deliverables as according to IRTC’s strategies, funding agreements, priorities and timelines.
• Responsible for operational plans and budget forecasts/monitoring/reviews for the Education Department.
• Prepares funding applications, education reports, manages the allocation of operating budgets and use of funds, prepares and submit reports, negotiation with suppliers/contractors/funders etc. and represents IRTC with CEO in dealing with funding partners and program renewals.
• Identifies opportunities to promote and enhance education program activities, develop materials and resources, prepare and deliver presentations.
• Responsible for the supervision of staff in accomplishing the business activities in the Education Department.
• Preparation of program cheque requisitions, correspondence, emails, memo’s, debrief notes, reports, literature, program updates (monthly, quarterly and annual reports).
• Ensures the CEO is kept up-to-date on education programs through the preparation and delivery of monthly reports and when immediately required.
Qualifications:
Education Requirements
• A University degree / College diploma in a related discipline such as education, business, public administration, social services or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Professional Designation/Training
• Counseling certification is considered an asset.
• Valid Class driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.
Previous Experience
• 5 years of senior level management experience, preferably within a First Nation environment.
• Experienced in supervisory, First Nation’s education programs, policy development, financial management and coordination activities.
• Experienced working with First Nations’ communities.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Characteristics
• Knowledge of program management principles, practices, techniques and tools.
• Knowledge of the First Nation education challenges and opportunities specific to the community served.
• Knowledgeable of and experience in the effective delivery of educational program and service requirements for First Nations students.
• Knowledgeable of federal and provincial legislations, regulations and programs as they relate to First Nation Education operations and First Nations student learning needs.
• Knowledgeable of relevant Master Tuition Agreements and experienced in working with provincial education authorities in area of First Nations students’ learning success.
• Knowledgeable of and experience in community development and strategic planning activities.
• Self-motivated, able to multi-task, detailed oriented, work independently, excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, and team oriented.
• Ability to manage workloads, set priorities, meets deadlines, work under pressure and adaptable to change.
• High level of communication skills – including preparation/editing reports for Senior Management Team, First Nation leadership, funders etc.
• Excellent problem-solving skills where problem situations are assessed, identifying the causes, gathering and processing relevant information, generating possible solutions and achieving resolutions.
• Fluency in Salteaux/Cree/Ojibway is an asset.
• Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search and Abuse Registry Check.
