Winnipeg Manitoba, Thursday April 3rd 2025 – The Interlake Reserves Tribal Council Inc. (IRTC) has officially announced the withdrawal of its representation of seven First Nations, including Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation, Peguis First Nation, Lake Manitoba First Nation, Pinaymootang First Nation, Little Saskatchewan First Nation, Lake St. Martin First Nation and Dauphin River First Nation, from Sport Manitoba and Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreational Council Inc.
This decision comes as a response to ongoing concerns regarding the lack of adequate support and resources for our First Nations communities and athletes. Despite multiple attempts to engage with both organizations, the IRTC has grown increasingly frustrated with the insufficient attentions given to the specific needs of our athletes and broader First Nations community.
“Our athletes deserve better. They deserve recognition, respect and resources that acknowledge their potential and contributions to sports in Manitoba” said Chief Cornell Mclean, Chairman of the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council Inc. “unfortunately, our experiences have shown that current structure does not provide the level of support necessary to foster our athlete’s growth and success”
Moving forward, the IRTC is committed to exploring alternatives avenues that will better support our athletes, including developing independent programs that focus empowerment, skill development, and cultural inclusion in sports.
“We will continue to advocate for our communities and ensure that our athletes receive the opportunities they deserve,” Added Chief Lawrence Letander, Vice-Chairman. “This is not the end, but rather a new beginning for our journey in sports and recreation.”
